Paruppu kadayal for chapathi in Tamil – How to make dal tadka

Moong dal / pasi paruppu – 2 tbsp

Toor dal / Thuvaram paruppu – 2 tbsp

Onion – 1/2 chopped

Tomato – 1/2 chopped

Crushed ginger – 1/2 tsp

Asafoetida / perungayam – 1/5 tsp

Turmeric pdr – 1/5 tsp

Cumin seed – 1/2 tsp

Chilli pdr – 1/2 tsp

Mustard seed – 1/2 tsp

Dry chilli – 1

Ghee – 1/2 tsp


1. Soak moong dal and toor dal in water for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

2. In a pressure cooker add soaked dals, cumin seed, asafoetida, turmeric pdr, chili pdr, ginger, onion and tomato. Add a cup of water for cooking. Let it cook for 4 to 5 pressure sounds on high flame.

3. Once the pressure cooker’s temperature subsides, open it , add salt and mash all the ingredients thoroughly .

4. Now it is the time for seasoning. Heat a kadai with a tsp ghee , splatter mustard seed, dry chilli, curry leaves. Pour this seasoning into the dal mixture. Now dhal curry is ready.


If you choose pot cooking method for dal, select a large pot, heat double the amount of water, let dal boil in water on medium heat. Do not cover the pot with a lid as foam from dal will rise and come out of the pot and make a mess. Let it cook on medium or low flame for 30 minutes and remove the foam from top.

After 30 minutes check a small amount, mash between fingers and can be mashed if it is well cooked. If not, boil a little longer.
